Creative Quiet Time with God (and a Little Help from SketchBox)

Over the past week, I’ve made a small change to my nightly routine—and honestly, it’s been one of the most refreshing things I’ve done in a long time.
Instead of ending my evenings scrolling through social media on my phone, I’ve chosen something different. Something quieter. Something more intentional.
I’ve started spending creative quiet time with God before bed.
Each night, I grab a simple sketchbook or drawing pad—nothing electronic, no screens—and a few art supplies. Then I just sit. Sometimes in silence, sometimes in prayer, sometimes with worship music softly in the background. And I draw.
There’s no pressure for perfection. No expectations. Just creating.
For me, this has become such a sweet time with God. It’s in those quiet moments—sketching, shading, letting my mind slow down—that I feel the most connected. It’s like I’ve given Him space to meet me there, and somehow He shows up in the lines, the creativity, and even the stillness.
And out of that quiet time… something beautiful happens.
I unwind.
I breathe deeper.
I rest better.
I’ve noticed I’m sleeping more peacefully, waking up less throughout the night, and starting my mornings feeling truly rested. All from simply putting the phone down and picking up a pencil.
How SketchBox Became Part of the Journey
Now, let me tell you about something that’s added a little extra excitement to this new rhythm…
I’ve seen ads for SketchBox for years, but never really took the step to try it. Recently, as I’ve been getting back into art as a form of healing and therapy, I decided it was finally time.
So yes… I pulled the card out—cha-ching!—and subscribed.
And I’m so glad I did.
Each month, SketchBox sends a box filled with premium art supplies to try out. What I love most is that they don’t just send materials—they also include guided content and videos so you can learn new techniques and actually use what you receive.
Here’s how I’ve been using it during my quiet time:
I follow along with their guided drawing pamphlet using the materials in the box
Then I create something of my own using those same tools
And honestly? That creative process has felt like worship in its own way.

This past week, I’ve shared several different pieces the following morning—one being the completed SketchBox tutorial image, and now I will share my own piece titled “3 Little Mushrooms.”
Why This Matters (More Than You Think)
We live in a world that is constantly noisy. Notifications, scrolling, content—it never really stops.
But choosing to step away from screens, even just for a little while before bed, creates space.
Space to hear God.Space to think.Space to create.
This simple practice—just God, me, and a few art supplies—has brought so much peace into my evenings. It’s not complicated, it’s not fancy… but it’s deeply meaningful.

Want to Try It?
If you’ve been craving a more peaceful way to end your day, I really encourage you to try this.
You don’t need anything elaborate. Just:
A sketchbook
A pencil or pen
A willing heart
And if you want to explore new tools and grow your creativity along the way, you can check out SketchBox here:
Give it a try before bedtime. You might be surprised what happens when you trade scrolling for stillness. @getsketchbox Note: Some links in this post are affiliate links, which means I may earn a small commission or rewards at no extra cost to you. Thank you for supporting what I do!
