🌿The Little Herb Garden That Keeps on Giving🌿

Last year marked my very first spring in our new home, and one of the things I was most excited about was starting an herb garden. I tucked it right beside our back porch—close enough to grab fresh herbs while cooking, but also in a space where I could enjoy the process of tending to it.

I started simple, planting basil, oregano, parsley, sage, cilantro, dill, rosemary, and thyme. Just beside the main bed, I added mint in its own planter (because if you know, you know… mint likes to take over!). To my surprise and joy, most of these herbs didn’t just grow—they thrived. Even through the winter months, many of them held strong, which felt like such a gift.

Each spring, I make it a priority to fertilize the garden well and keep everything properly watered. Last year, I let my basil go to seed, and I was able to collect those seeds for this year’s planting. Not only that, but I dried enough basil and several other herbs to carry me through the colder months—something that felt both practical and deeply satisfying.

Just this past week, I spent a warm evening out by the garden, cleaning up the beds, trimming back overgrowth, and preparing the space for a new season. There’s something incredibly peaceful about that kind of work—hands in the dirt, fresh air, and a sense of renewal all around.

🌱 Why I Love Growing My Own Herbs 🌱

Growing herbs has become one of my favorite and most relaxing rhythms. There’s something special about stepping outside and snipping fresh herbs to add to a meal. It makes cooking feel more intentional, more connected.

During the spring and summer, I use them fresh as often as possible. Then, as the seasons shift, I preserve what I can so we can continue enjoying those same flavors through fall and winter. It’s a simple way to keep our meals feeling wholesome, clean, and nourishing.

🌿 How I Preserve My Herbs 🌿

When it’s time to store herbs, I keep my process pretty simple:

  1. I harvest what I need and give everything a good wash using the Thieves Fruit & Veggie Soak from YoungLiving.

  2. Then I lay the herbs out on a dish towel and allow them to air dry completely.

  3. Once dried, I place each herb (separately) into the dehydrator until fully dried out.

  4. After dehydrating, I remove the leaves from the stems.

    • The stems go into a bag for making homemade stocks later.

  5. I grind the dried leaves using either a spice grinder or my mortar and pestle.

  6. Finally, I store everything in labeled mason jars.

The herbs I use most often stay right on the back of my stove for easy access, while the rest are stored neatly in the cabinet nearby.
